On this walking tour of Portugal’s historic maritime centre, I’ll share remarkable tales about the Age of Discovery, the swashbuckling pirates who roamed the seas, and the shadows of the transatlantic slave trade.

The tour starts in Lagos’ old town square, Plaza Infante Dom Henrique. From there, you’ll follow cobblestone streets to the imposing Castle of Lagos, built in the 700s, where soldiers once defended the town from invaders.

You’ll find out how during Portugal’s Golden Age, Henry the Navigator transformed the town into a launching point for expeditions that would change the course of history. I’ll tell you the story of Gil Eanes, the brave navigator who defied myths and sailed past Cape Bojador, forever changing maritime history.

Our tour ends at the Marina de Lagos, just beyond the old city walls.
